What a little Pacific Northwest ingenuity can do:
What a little Pacific Northwest ingenuity can do:

Kevin Eckert and his group of 10 like to have fun and they like a challenge.

Kevin is Principal of Seattle’s BUILD LLC  and Manager of Special Projects Division, an “industrious Architecture Company located in Seattle’s University District.”  They plan to challenge themselves by biking to Vancouver B.C. in early August to raise money for ShelterBoxUSA.

Before they leave, they’ll be attending a wine tasting event hosted by PICNIC, a food and wine boutique located at 6801 Greenwood Avenue North in Seattle (206.453.5867) near Phinney Ridge. Owners Jenny and Anson Klock host wine tastings every Thursday night. This time they have dedicated next Thursday’s event to ShelterBox.

“We are excited about the ShelterBox benefit wine tasting coming up Thursday, July 29th. All tasting fees will be donated to ShelterBoxUSA,” according to Anson. “The suggested donation for this special evening is $20 per person.”  He added that PICNIC would be debuting five new Spanish wines paired with some delicious treats to nibble on, and that “everyone is invited to join us and help those who truly need help.”

For more on this extraordinary story, here’s an excerpt from the BUILD LLC blog:

“Shortly after the January 12th earthquake in Haiti, team BUILD did some serious research on emergency shelter and all signs pointed to ShelterBox as an excellent organization to put our resources towards. Their motto is “an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people affected by disaster worldwide.” Those are words that we could get behind and we’ve been huge fans ever since. Earlier this summer we sponsored a buddy of ours to visit Haiti for assessing structural damage; after being in the field and experiencing the disaster on the ground in Léogâne, he reported back that ShelterBox was indeed the real deal and was making a significant difference. . . (be sure to click on “read more” in the blog to get the full story.)

Kevin explained how this venture grew: “We figured it was a great way to get in shape and give back to those unfortunate enough to have their lives destroyed by disaster—something that could hit any one of us at anytime, anywhere. We’re currently sitting at $9,385 raised (as of July 23) with a goal of $10,000 or more,” he added.  “Raising my crew’s fitness level and raising $$ for a good cause = a fun combination.”

The team prepares for their ride.

“As for our ride,” Kevin explained that “four folks from my company and six additional people in our Park Modern and design community have committed to riding bikes to Vancouver.  We chose to raise money for ShelterBox as a part of our training and preparation for the ride.”

BUILD LLC, PICNIC, and a group of ten; toss in a great cause with ShelterBoxUSA and you’ve got a winning combination, helping people in need, worldwide. You can’t better a solid dose of Pacific Northwest ingenuity—anywhere.
